The Importance of Maintaining Water Heaters

Water heaters are used nearly every day, and it is no wonder why. They provide hot water for showers, dishes, and laundry, making them a key factor for daily comfort. But without water heater maintenance, they will break down over time.

It is important to maintain a water heater because they do not last forever and are expensive to repair or replace. Instead of spending money on a new water heater, why not spend much less on yearly water heater maintenance?

Why Is It Important to Completely Flush a Water Heater?

An important part of water heater maintenance is flushing out a water heater. All water has various minerals and sediment that build up in a tank over time, and hard water has even more. One of the most common types is calcium, which creates a white or milky ring on the inside of a water heater.

Although it is not dangerous to consume or use water with minerals and buildup, it can cause a blockage that reduces the efficiency of a water heater. With reduced efficiency, the heater has to work harder to heat water, increasing utility bills. The sediment build-up can also corrode the tank over time, reducing the water heater's lifespan. That is why flushing the tank is so important. It gets all the sediment out to help the water heater be more efficient and last longer.

Additional Water Heater Maintenance Tips

Maintenance doesn’t stop after flushing the tank. It should also include checking the water lines and pipes that connect the water heater to the water lines. Experts recommend checking spots like the valves and anode rod. If there are signs of rust or wear and tear, it is best to replace them as they can cause disturbances when not properly functioning.

The anode rod should be changed around every 3-5 years, but it's good to check it every year during maintenance since it helps prevent corrosion of the water heater tank. It is a piece of metal in the tank that attracts minerals and sediments to prevent them from corroding the water heater tank.

Three Benefits of Regular Maintenance

Annual water heater maintenance has many benefits and is super important for homeowners! When there is regular maintenance, this can decrease the chances that a homeowner will need to replace their entire system too soon. Water heater maintenance should be done around twice a year.

Homeowners who do not pay close attention to their systems can miss the warning signs of severe problems that could have been caught early or prevented. Maintenance can also help avoid costly repairs and rising utility bills.
