How To Find A Hidden Water Leak

Underground water leaks can cause major property damage. Because they are located deep in the ground, it is often difficult to notice them. Underground leaks are not always as simple to spot from a flooded lawn. Whether the leak is caused by pipe corrosion or root invasion, plumbers must solve this problem as soon as possible before any damage gets worse.

The Top 3 Signs of An Underground Leakwater bill

There are several ways to tell if a pipe is leaking without digging up the yard, such as:

Hearing Waterfall Sounds

Running water sounds like a waterfall when it’s traveling through the walls. This may be a normal noise when the shower is running or somebody uses the sink for a prolonged time, but the sound should not be heard if appliances and fixtures are off. Continuing to hear running or dripping water sounds when no one is using water is a sign of a possible leak in the plumbing.

Decreased Water Pressure

Decreased water pressure is another tell-tale sign that an underground pipe is malfunctioning. Water pressure is most easily noticed in the shower. A weak stream may not be able to drench the body and hair at the same rate as it once did.

Dull water pressure can create longer shower times and may prevent shampoo from completely draining. Unfortunately, weak water pressure may be due to other reasons. If the pressure has always been weak, this is not an accurate way to predict underground leaks.

Increased Water Bills

An increase in the water bill is another way to assess plumbing issues. If tenants use the same amount of water as normal, the bill should not cost substantially more. If the water bill goes up when water usage has stayed the same, there is likely a leak in the plumbing.

Understanding a Water Meter

One of the best ways for homeowners to tell if there is a leak underground is to check the water meter. Water meters are designed to measure the volume and flow of a home’s water supply. In the United States, this measurement is calibrated in cubic feet.

Homeowners should check the number on the water meter and then shut off the water supply. The water valve may be located in a garage, basement, or closet. If the meter keeps showing more water usage after the water was shut off, the plumbing system has a leak.

Professional Leak Detection Servicesprofessional

Sound detection equipment is designed to pinpoint the location of a leak. Professional plumbing technicians are trained to use this device to find where the noise is coming from. If an underground pipe is actively leaking, the noise may sound gurgling.

Plumbers can then use a drain inspection camera for a visual exam if a sound is detected. This technology provides a way to locate the leak without digging up the property. The camera is mounted on a long cable inserted into pipes.

For hidden leaks in floorboards or under drywall, infrared thermal imaging cameras will detect moisture in hot water pipes. These are usually found behind concrete and soil. If there is a sewer line leak, the camera picks up on the temperature change.

Plumbers may also conduct a soil probe. This is done to allow the technician a chance to find pressurized leaks. Plumbers use specialized equipment that can help identify what type of leak it is and how far underground it’s located.
